BYU Choir Phenomenon

BYU choirs are very interesting things. If you ever go to choir practice, there are usually at most 10 people there. Choir directors are always begging more people to come. And usually the people who come (at least the men) really can't sing. I've tried to participate in several BYU choirs, but I just get frustrated because there are only 3 bass singers (including me), and I'm the only one who seems to realize whether or not you've hit the right note.

The thing is, anytime a BYU choir is asked to sing, sometimes it seems like half the ward stands up. Like 50 or more people. Yes, that's right - there are "choir members" who really only go to choir practice maybe once (if that), and then sing with the choir in church. It is the weirdest thing. Some BYU students just consider themselves special. I had a roommate once who said if he was ever choir director, he would put pauses in weird places to make all those people stick out and never do it again.

You should see our choir, they always do a fantastic job. There's about 30, with even numbers of males and females. Today they sang "consider the lilies" one of my favourites, and it was beautiful. But I remember those people who would get up and sing without ever really practicing...it's like they were doing it because they didn't want to be the only one sitting in the congregation. Weird.

I agree with your friend. I would LOVE it if a choir director did put in weird and odd stops and pauses. Then maybe the "choir" would understand the importance to coming to choir practice!!

OK, I see I am signed in as Kylie, THIS IS REALLY JULIE!!

Christopher, I hope you go to choir practice no matter what. As you well know the choir always needs good male voices and you are privileged to have one. Music is a very important part of our church worship. Even HF speaks to us about the importance of music. I wish your Mum would join the choir now. They need her voice and they would be so thrilled. I wonder what Griffin would say about that.

I personally enjoy choir practice more often than not more than the other meetings.
There is certainly a better fellowship there. Choir members are usually the people who show that they are willing to go the extra mile.
Over the years, I have treasured memories of friends I have come to know much closer as a result of choir practice.

I wish I could sing like "Sue". But I'm not sure I would give up my face and where I live to have her gorgeous voice! I'm vain.
